virtual flag
The virtual flag consists of a single row of 160 RGB LEDs. Together they display an image that appears to the passers-by only when they turn away from the installation.
When looking at the virtual flag for the first time, one sees LEDs flickering in a random pattern which is not visually coherent. At the moment the onlooker turns his/her head, he/she will be surprised by seeing a fullscreen color picture.
Any bitmap image of 160×256 pixels can be uploaded via USB to the virtual flag.
The first public showing of the piece was in front of the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) during museumnacht2008, where people queued to see the skull of Damian Hirst. While waiting, patrons could see an image of the infamous skull momentarily appear to them as they shook their heads or turned away. A perception play created by the virtual flag.
